Indian Army Approves 5 Make II Projects

The Indian Army is leading initiatives to accelerate "Make Projects," which are the main engines for the infusion of specific technology through indigenous development. The Make in India project, which aims to develop domestic competencies with the help of both the public and private sectors, is built around the "Make" category of capital acquisition. Government-funded projects are referred to as "Make-I," whereas industry-funded initiatives are referred to as "Make-II." Let us see which five Make II projects the Indian Army has given the green light.

The Indian Army has recently issued Project Sanction Orders (PSOs) for five Make II projects, which will help the ongoing programmes even more. In essence, Make II programmes are industry-funded initiatives that involve designing, development, and creative solutions from Indian vendors for the creation of prototypes. Following the production of a successful prototype, an order guarantee is offered. The projects for which project sanction orders have been approved are as follows:

1- High Frequency Man Packed Software Defined Radio (HFSDR)

  • 14 Developing Agencies have received project sanction orders for the Make II program's High Frequency Man Packed Software Defined Radio (HFSDR) prototype development.

  • The Indian Army intends to purchase 300 high frequency man-pack software defined radios upon the prototype's successful development.

  • Modern, portable HFSDRs will enable long-distance radio communication through increased data capacity and bandwidth in addition to increased security.

  • Geographic Information System (GIS)-based map-based navigation will make blue force tracking easier and improve real-time situational awareness.

  • These radios will take the place of the outdated and insufficiently capable high frequency radios already in the inventory.

2- Drone Kill System

  • Even though drone-related technologies are constantly developing, remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPASs) have had a significant impact on the contemporary battlefield. The local industry has the necessary knowledge to create solutions in this subject that are of the highest quality.

  • The Indian Army has given a project sanction order to 18 Developing Agencies for the purchase of 35 sets of Drone Kill Systems under the Make II scheme, following the successful creation of the Prototype, as part of efforts to further support the local anti-drone ecosystem.

  • The project is only available to start-ups and Micro, Small & Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).

  • The Drone Kill System is a hard kill anti-drone system being designed to combat low Radio Cross Section (RCS) drones and unmanned aerial systems (UAS). It can operate in any terrain and at any time of day or night.

3- Infantry Weapon Training Simulator (IWTS)

  • A project sanction order has been issued for the creation of the prototype in preparation for the following Make II acquisition of 125 sets of infantry weapon training simulators.

  • The Indian Army is leading the first tri-service Make II project, Infantry Weapon Training Simulator (IWTS).

  • IWTS will be used to improve young troops' shooting abilities on a variety of weapons employed by the, offering user-friendly graphics to replicate combat situations.

  • Ten people can be trained simultaneously on an Infantry Weapon Training Simulator (IWTS).

  • IWTS is a cutting-edge training tool that will save ongoing costs for live ammunition while also removing the difficulties associated with finding firing ranges and bad weather.

4- 155mm Terminally Guided Munitions (TGM)

  • Six Developing Agencies have received project sanction orders for the development of 155 mm Terminally Guided Munition (TGM) under the Make II programme.

  • In order to complete missions with the least amount of collateral damage, the Indian Army wants to purchase about 2000 rounds of 155mm TGM against High Value Targets with guaranteed precision and lethality.

  1. Medium Range Precision Kill System (MRPKS)

  • 15 Developing Agencies have received project approval orders for the development of a Medium Range Precision Kill System prototype under the Make-II category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020.

  • After this prototype's successful development, the Indian Army will purchase 10 sets of the Medium Range Precision Kill System.

  • Once launched, the Medium Range Precision Kill System (MRPKS) may "loiter" in the air for up to two hours while acquiring, identifying, and engaging high-value targets up to 40 kilometers away.

Increased Design & Development in the defence industry is being encouraged by the Make II procurement scheme in order to achieve the indigenization of high-end technology systems for various types of weapon systems, ammunition, and contemporary training systems, which are currently unavailable in the nation.
