The 54th Vijay Diwas was observed by HQ Southern Command to mark India’s historic victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak War. A respectful wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Command War Memorial in Pune to honor the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.
Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, Army Commander of Southern Command and recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, led the tribute by laying a wreath. The ceremony brought together 1971 war veterans, serving officers, school children, NCC cadets, and other dignitaries. Their presence reflected the deep respect and gratitude for the soldiers' sacrifices and highlighted the spirit of patriotism that continues to inspire generations.
Vijay Diwas, celebrated every year on 16 December, honors India’s victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak War, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. This victory remains one of the most significant in modern history, with over 93,000 Pakistani troops surrendering. It showcased India’s military strength, strategic leadership, and commitment to regional peace and stability.
As part of the celebrations, a 405 km Vijay Diwas Ultra Marathon was organized. Flagged off on 6 December 2024 in Mumbai, the marathon concluded in Pune. The event saw participation from 15 core runners, including Col Mandeep Singh Maan (Retd) and Captain Pooja Mehra (Retd), along with veterans, school children, and NCC cadets. The runners passed through major cities like Nashik, Ahilyanagar, and Kolhapur, symbolizing endurance, unity, and remembrance.
The marathon also set the stage for the upcoming Army Day 2025, which will be held in Pune on 15 January 2025. This year’s theme, "Samarth Bharat - Saksham Sena", highlights the strength, resilience, and commitment of the Indian Army. The event will showcase modern military advancements and honor the bravery of soldiers dedicated to safeguarding India’s sovereignty.
The 54th Vijay Diwas celebrations in Pune served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our heroes and the enduring spirit of courage and patriotism.
