JAT Regiment
The JAT Regiment is an integral part of the infantry regiments of the Indian Army. Embellished with the motto of “Unity and Valour”. The JAT Regiment is considered as one of the longest-serving and most-decorated regiments of the Indian Army with 8 Mahavir Chakra, 8 Kirti Chakra, 32 Shaurya Chakra, and 39 Vir Chakra along with other major achievements. With its active participation in the First and the Second World Wars, the JAT Regiment has a 200-year long service history in several operations & combats in India and abroad.
Brief History of the JAT Regiment
It was July 1795, when Captain Henry De Castro raised “The Calcutta Militia”, also known as the Calcutta Native Militia, which later became an infantry battalion of the Bengal Army. At the time of the grouping of the Regiments of the Indian Army in January 1922, the merger of four active battalions and one training battalion into a single regiment led to the foundation of the 9th JAT Regiment.

Welfare Activities for the JAT Regiment
In the year 1985, JAT Regiment Officers' Association (JORA) was formed for the welfare of the personnel employed in the JAT Regiment of the Indian Army. Brigadier LN Sabherwal, then Commander of the JAT Regiment Centre (JRC) was the first member of the JAT Regiment Officers' Association (JORA). Following are some welfare activities for the JAT Regiment which are accorded to the personnel.

Active Participation of the JAT Regiment Post Independence
The JAT Regiment of the Indian Army has made several notable contributions in the pre-independence as well as post-independence era. After the Indian independence in 1947, the JAT Regiment participated in various wars including the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947–1948, the Sino-Indian War of 1962, India-Pakistan conflicts in 1965 and 1971. The five brave battalions of the JAT Regiment also took part In the Kargil War of 1999. Thus, the JAT Regiment has been defending our country well both in peace time and war time operations.
