In recent years, the Khalistan issue has resurfaced in the news due to several factors. One reason is the continued existence of a small section of the Sikh diaspora, primarily in countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, who advocate for an independent Khalistan. Question- 2 Who started this Khalistan Movement in India?

Answer- The Khalistan movement in India was not started by a single individual, but rather emerged as a collective response to various socio-political factors affecting the Sikh community in Punjab. It is important to understand that the movement had multiple phases and different groups played significant roles at different times. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a charismatic preacher and leader of the Damdami Taksal (a Sikh religious institution), became a prominent figure associated with the movement. Bhindranwale and his armed followers fortified themselves inside the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, leading to the tragic Operation Blue Star in 1984.

 

Question- 3 How Khalistan Movement started in India?

Answer- Khalistan Movement is said to be started from Anandpur Sahib Resolution. In 1973, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a Sikh political party, adopted the Anandpur Sahib Resolution. It outlined a set of political, economic, and social demands for the Sikh community, including increased regional autonomy and recognition of Sikh identity. The resolution became a key catalyst for the demand for Khalistan.

 

Question- 4 How did India deal with Khalistan Movement?

Answer- Initially, Indian Political Leadership did not take Khalistan Movement seriously. But later on when this movement became very serious and violent. Indian Leadership took the following steps to curtail Khalistan Movement in India- Operation Blue Star in 1984, Counterinsurgency Operations, and Dialogues with Sikh Groups like Sirmohi Akali Dal. These steps proved to be successful and through these steps Khalistan Movement was successfully curtailed.

 

Question- 5 What is Operation Blue Star?

Answer- In 1984, the Indian government launched Operation Blue Star, a military operation aimed at flushing out militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale from the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. The operation resulted in a significant loss of life and damage to the shrine. This event deeply impacted Sikh sentiments and led to widespread anger and protests among the Sikh community.

 

Question- 6 What is the current status of the Khalistan movement? Is it still active?

Answer- The Khalistan movement, which advocates for a separate Sikh state, is currently not considered a significant active movement in India. Over the years, the movement has lost much of its support and momentum. But in Foreign Countries such as Canada and Australia, this movement is still active. Answer- Khalistan Movement has been a big security issue for India. In the past, it resulted in so many death and instability in the state of Punjab. Today, Khalistan continues to be a challenge for national security though not on such a big scale as it used to be in the past. A few attacks took place in the state of Punjab and they were claimed by Groups working for Khalistan Movement only. Khalistani groups are said to be involved in Drug trafficking in the Northern part of India also.

 

Question- 8 What is India doing to counter Khalistan Movement?

Answer- India has asked its friendly countries to stop the growth of the Khalistani Movement in their countries. Recently, the Indian Government launched a big operation to arrest Khalistani Leader Amrit Pal Singh. In India, Khalistan Movement is nearly dead. Only some people with vested interests are involved in fuelling Khalistan Movement.

 

Question-9 Is Khalistan Movement impact India’s relations with other countries?

Answer- Recently, there were some problems between India and Canada over the issue of the Khalistan Movement. Recently, Indian Mission in Canada came under attack and proper security was not provided by Canadian authorities as well. So, Indian Foreign Minister Shree S Jaishankar criticised Canadian authorities for not providing adequate security to Indian Mission.

 

Question- 10 What is the role of Pakistan in fueling the Khalistan Issue?

Answer- some Sikh separatist leaders and organizations found refuge in Pakistan during the peak of the movement, Pakistan has been providing support to the Khalistan Movement for a long time. In recent times, Pakistan has been involved in funding Khalistan Movement in Foreign Countries.
