According to a report published by the Indian Express, the Indian Army is going to implement a new physical protocol policy for its officers. The new policy will require officers of the Indian Army to be physically fit according to newly laid down physical criteria. This new physical policy will require officers to be physically fit and their fitness will tested every quarter. A few additional tests have been introduced in addition to the existing BPET(Battle Physical Efficiency Tests) and PPT (Physical Proficiency) Tests.

 

What new tests have been introduced?

According to the new physical fitness policy officers will qualify for a half-yearly 10 km speed march, the Annual Swimming Proficiency Test requiring officers to swim 50m. An Army Physical Fitness Assessment Card (APAC) has also been introduced to track their physical fitness. These tests have been introduced in addition to existing BPET(Battle Physical Efficiency Tests) and PPT (Physical Proficiency) Tests. Under BPET, Army personnel have to qualify 2.5 km run with a full battle load and complete exercises like a metre shuttle, pushups, chinups, sit-ups, and a 100-meter sprint. These two tests intend to evaluate officers’ physical combat readiness.

 

Why the new physical criteria have been introduced?

The Indian Army has introduced new physical criteria for the officers citing reasons for “Declining physical standards among officers” and a “Rise in lifestyle diseases”.

 

               Physical Criteria for Indian Army Officers

Physical Criteria for age between 28 to 32 years

        

Physical Criteria for age between 33 to 37 years

        

Physical Criteria for age between 38 to 43 years

           

Physical Criteria for age between 43 to 47 years

           

Physical Criteria for age 48 and above

            

 

How the new policy will be implemented?

According to the report, a Brigadier level officer will be responsible for ensuring this physical criteria. Earlier Commanding Officer (C.O.) used to be the responsible person for ensuring physical criteria among the officers. In case officers are found overweight, they will be given written counseling followed by 30 30-day improvement period. If they fail to meet the criteria even after this, disciplinary actions will be taken against them.

Indian Army, being a war-ready fighting force needs physically fit officers, that’s they need to be both physically and mentally fit. new guidelines will help officers of the Indian Army keep themselves physically fit. This policy is a significant step towards not only bringing uniformity in the physical standards but also motivating officers of the Indian Army to be physically and mentally fit.
